In the resulting absence of Cleeve from Leigh's life despite the two of them loving each other, Leigh further describes her troubled relationship with her mother and stepfather, the two who each had their own ulterior motives in the way they dealt with Leigh. The only seeming bright spot in Leigh's life at Farthinggale was the friendship she struck with her younger sickly stepbrother, Troy.
